Nordic  Walkers                                                        Nordic walkers stride the Lincoln 10k

Traditionally, people entering the Active Nation Lincoln 10K Road Race try to get the best time possible, by jogging and running.  But this year, a new kind of exercise will be brought to the event – Nordic Walking.

Nordic Walking is an enhancement of ordinary walking, using poles to propel the walker along and make sure the upper body muscles are used as well as the legs.

Led by Martin Thomas from Mandarin Leisure, one of the two specialist walking groups taking part in the race aims to complete the course in between one and a half and two hours.

Martin Thomas said: “Nordic Walking is a derivative of cross country skiing – the technique is used during off season training when snow is not available.

“Some of the group have been Nordic Walking for a year, while others have joined very recently and they have all progressed their techniques at their own individual rates.  We will probably split into two or three smaller groups as the race goes on.  Not only will this be a first for the Lincoln 10K, but it will be the first time that most members of the group have entered a race of any kind.

“I would like to thank the Lincoln 10K organisers for allowing us to take part in the race, and hope it will showcase the activity enough to encourage others to try this low impact and very sociable form of exercise.”

Keith Taylor, Senior Sport Development Officer at the City of Lincoln Council, which organises the race, said: “Over the years, we’ve had all sorts of people taking part in the Lincoln 10K.  Usually, people set off with the aim of running at least some of the course, and this is the first time we’ve had a group of dedicated walkers.  We’re always trying to make the Lincoln 10K accessible for everyone, which is why we have the school and parent races the day before the main race, and we’re glad to welcome the Nordic walkers on Sunday 25th March.”

Places are still available for the Active Nation Lincoln 10K Road Race on Sunday 25th March, as well as for the primary and secondary school races and the Buggy Push on Saturday 24th March.  There is also opportunities to attend the “come and try it” session at Yarborough Leisure on Saturday 24th March from 10:00am to 4:00pm

The Challenge

I will be running from Castle Howard in North Yorkshire, to Lincoln Castle in order to raise as much money as possible for Help for Heroes.

The route is approximately 100 miles long, taking me over the North Yorkshire Wolds, over the Humber bridge and through many Lincolnshire towns and villages, such as Brigg, Kirton in Lindsey, Gainsborough, Struton By Stow and eventually into Lincoln. I will hopefully be finishing at the  Active Nation Lincoln 10K Road  Race finishing line along with thousands of others running for charity and for personal achievement. I am aiming to complete the challenge within a 24 hour period!

I wanted to come up with a challenge that was on a par with the types of challenges our troops face when they return injured from operational duties. I quickly realised that nothing I could come up with would even come close to the type of hard work and determination shown by our injured troops during their recovery and beyond. Instead I came up with Castle 2 Castle 100! This event is all the more challenging for me because I have never attempted long distance running before, and only have five months to train!

I’d like to thank the City of Lincoln Council for helping me to promote my event and ‘gatecrash’ the Active Nation Lincoln 10K Road Race.  Their willingness to help me organise the event has made my life much easier, leaving more time to train.

I’d like to thank Captain Peter Graves and his unit, 147 Field Company, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, based in Scunthorpe, for their help so far in providing equipment, medical and safety support for the event. Without the help of such a great bunch of people, Castle 2 Castle 100 would not have got off the ground. It’s nice to know I can still rely on the REME, even after I have left!

I’d like to thank my sponsors, Raymac Signs Limited and the Wortley House Hotel, for providing generous cash donations and equipment.

Help For Heroes (charity no: 1120920)

Help for Heroes was founded by Bryn and Emma Parry in October 2007 out of a desire to help the wounded servicemen and women returning from Afghanistan and Iraq.

The message of the charity is simple: We are strictly non political and non critical; we simply want to help.  We believe that anyone who volunteers to serve in time of war, knowing that they may risk all, is a hero.  These are ordinary people doing extraordinary things and some of them are living with the consequences of their service for life.  We may not be able to prevent our soldiers from being wounded, but together we can help them get better.es was founded by Bryn and Emma Parry in October 2007 out of a desire to help the wounded Servicemen and women returning from Afghanistan and Iraq. The message of this simple: We are strictly non Help for Heroes.
